Setting boundaries on the job and finding freelance work
Happy Tuesday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
📝 ‘Publications paying $500 and up’: Tammy Danan, a freelancer of about five years, created a spreadsheet to act as a “go-to tool for publications that pay really well, that would make my life easier. After I made it I just didn’t see the point of not sharing it.”
🗞 McClatchy reportedly sets minimum salary: Sacramento Bee Reporter Jeong Park tweeted, “There are not that many companywide emails that make me drop my jaw, but this is one: McClatchy will establish a minimum salary in its newsrooms, of at least $42K (and $45K in high-cost markets including Sacramento).”
See more on this in The Objective newsletter, which includes “reporting, first-person commentary and reported essays on communities that journalism in the United States has typically ignored.”
👩 ‘What you do is not who you are’: Tim Herrera of NYT’s Smarter Living wrote at length about thinking through your identity in relation to work, compartmentalizing it from other aspects of your life and establishing healthy boundaries.
“Experts say it’s important to protect yourself from letting problems in one area of your life affect the other areas, especially now that the borders between every aspect of our lives are blurrier than ever,” he wrote.
“A bad week at work is a drag on your mental health, but if your work is only a part of your identity, and not defining it completely, the overall emotional impact of that bad week is less severe.”
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🏠 ‘Float houses’ for Mardi Gras: Nola.com’s collection of homes decked out for Mardi Gras is a welcome distraction because parades can’t happen this year.
🍫 The best brownies I’ve had: I miss tackling big baking projects. (It’s hard for one or two people to eat everything!) But Ghirardelli’s double chocolate brownie mix is just about the right size (and even better if you throw in some walnuts).
🐶 Meet Fanny the Bernese Mountain mix: “She has a rare skin condition called vitiligo, causing her hair to depigment. 14/10 would be an honor to pet,” WeRateDogs tweeted. I concur.
