Subscriber post: Advice from 3 journalists who found job connections from this newsletter
Reach out to your networks, utilize readings and connect with those sharing jobs

One of my favorite things to do with this newsletter is connect you to potential hiring managers and other mentorship networks. That’s why with each role, I include the source of the job posting, including potential hiring managers and others working at various news organizations.
When I did a recent survey of readers, I asked a few folks who found a connection to a new job for advice so they might share it with you all. Thank you so much to Emma, Kate and Dan for your thoughtful notes!
Reach out to your network
Emma Peaslee, a Kroc Fellow with NPR, wrote that when she applies for a role, she first checks to see if she knows anyone who works at the organization.
“I had just graduated from my master’s program and was actively looking for work this past summer. I was checking Indeed.com and then individual company websites all the time.”
But I still didn’t see the opening at National Journal till I came across it in your newsletter. I knew there was a recent graduate of my program working at NJ, so I reached out to him. He helped pass along my application to the right team.”
Utilize readings and connect with those sharing jobs
Kate Hidalgo Bellows, a reporter for The Island Packet via Report for America, wrote that she read about Adriana Lacy and Caitlin Ostroff’s Media Mentors program through this newsletter where she met a mentor who encouraged her to apply for RFA.
“Advice for others would probably just be to open all the links, reach out to people mentioned because they tend to be the types who want to help aspiring journalists and those looking for jobs.”
Scan other jobs sections for a potential good fit
Dan Stahl, Copy Editor and Web Producer at The New Yorker, found his current role via a link to an editor’s tweet about the opening.
“Check the newsletter regularly and thoroughly. I was impressed by the number of first-rate job openings that cycled through. Even if you don’t see a great match, peruse the other sections. I remember a notice for freelance pitches from a publication that paid stunningly well—I would have pursued it had the job I’d just applied to not come through…
“I generally hate newsletters and the way they swamp my inbox. But Mandy does hers right, delivering quality content concisely and engagingly. Dog pics for the win!”

Hi Mandy! I work at Simons Foundation and we have a job opening for one of our editorially-independent digital science magazines, Quanta. I'd love to get the word out about this job. Are you able to post about this opportunity? https://bit.ly/3a7ivNk
