Advice for freelancers and navigating a job search amid exhaustion
Editor’s note: A previous version of this newsletter had a link in the narrative that went to the wrong source. It’s been updated. Sorry about that!
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
💻 ‘How to job hunt (when you’re already exhausted)’: Marlo Lyons, a career coach and strategist, wrote for Harvard Business Review about making a plan when looking for a new role by setting aside specific blocks of time for the job search, making a schedule of tasks and finding support when you need it.
“The most important aspect of job hunting is to be compassionate with yourself and change your thought process from ‘I’m not doing enough’ to ‘I’m doing the best I can,’” Lyons wrote.
✨ Helpful advice for freelancers: Poynter published multiple pieces with great tips for current and aspiring freelancers from Elizabeth Djinis and Britany Robinson, including first-person stories and advice from multiple journalists:
Journalists are switching to freelance. 7 things they wish they knew first.
Why journalists are leaving their full-time media jobs to go freelance
📝 A Q&A with me about finding jobs in FWT: In Tim Herrera’s latest Freelancing with Tim newsletter, he asked me some great questions about job hunting. Check out my answers and some of Tim’s upcoming Zoom panels about how to write better personal essays, set rates, launch a podcast and more.
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🦃 A rafter of turkeys on the run: Apparently Sam doesn’t care one bit about these feathered friends.
📆 Sharing internships and fellowships: I built a calendar last week for early career journalists to keep tabs on intern and fellow applications, and you all did an awesome job sharing it. Thank you!
📺 Getting ready for ‘Succession’ Season 3: We’re rewatching the show, and I’m not sure if I’m more excited to see Roman and Gerri or Tom and Greg.
