Count down to the new year with the top resources from 2021.
Happy (almost) New Year!
To countdown to 2022, I did a content analysis of the top readings and resources subscribers engaged with throughout 2021. Here’s the first five of 10 top items read by you and curated by me:
No. 10
✂️ Tips for trimming lengthy stories: Karen K. Ho of Business Insider asked editors on Twitter in July how they cut back stories to hit their ideal word count. Respondents chimed in with everything from using active voice to removing adverbs to looking at work on mobile.
No. 9
💻 ‘How to job hunt (when you’re already exhausted)’: Marlo Lyons, a career coach and strategist, wrote in October for Harvard Business Review about making a plan when looking for a new role by setting aside specific blocks of time for the job search, making a schedule of tasks and finding support when you need it.
“The most important aspect of job hunting is to be compassionate with yourself and change your thought process from ‘I’m not doing enough’ to ‘I’m doing the best I can,’” Lyons wrote.
No. 8
👀 ‘Six steps you can take to prevent burnout’: Brianna Hatch wrote in August for GroundTruth’s Navigator newsletter about “actions you can take to protect your mental well-being while remaining a productive member of your team.”
Key advice included establishing boundaries and keeping them, baking breaks into your day and stepping back from tech.
No. 7
👉 ‘Why Stacy-Marie Ishmael doesn’t see leaving a job as a failure’: Jaden Edison interviewed Stacy-Marie Ishmael now of Bloomberg News for Poynter’s “Some Personal News” series in August and spoke with her about how “working through one crisis after another presents questions about sustainability, not just burnout.”
No. 6
🙌 ‘What am I going to do with my life???’: Millie Tran now of Condé Nast reshared this excellent slide deck in April that she created about how she navigated her winding career path.

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this year:
👀 ‘How to focus and get shit done’: Katie Hawkins-Gaar, author of the My Sweet Dumb Brain newsletter, shared four productivity tips that work for her, and I absolutely love the first one.
🌌 ‘What’s “revenge bedtime procrastination,” and how do I stop it?’ This June piece from The Cut hit a little too close to home this year.
🐶 Meet Fanny the Bernese Mountain mix: “She has a rare skin condition called vitiligo, causing her hair to depigment. 14/10 would be an honor to pet,” WeRateDogs tweeted in February. I concur.
