Learning from mistakes and taking career breaks
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
3️⃣ ‘Yes, I make mistakes. Here’s three of them.’ Writer Jen A. Miller described in her newsletter, Notes from a Hired Pen, about a few freelancing mistakes and what she learned from them.
“It’s OK to make mistakes, especially when you’re just starting out. As long as you learn something about your goofs, you’ll become a better freelance writer and business person because of it (because, after all, this is a business),” Miller wrote.
+ Also from Miller: Subscribe to her newsletter and check out her ebooks ($10 each) about freelance writing best practices
📝 ‘Advice on internships, jobs and early career pathways’: The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing is hosting a panel today at 2 p.m. with speakers from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times focused on how to “break in and thrive in the early years of your career as a business journalist.”
💻 ‘How LinkedIn’s “career break” feature could help normalize caregiving’: Julianne McShane wrote for The Washington Post about how “LinkedIn users can now classify their time away from paid work as one of 13 types of career breaks.” I could have used this feature when I was first starting out!
Thanks for reading,
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
📰 ‘From Miami to history’: Miami Herald Executive Editor Monica Richardson tweeted the front page of her newspaper after Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court, saying “This tells my 9-year-old and little girls everywhere especially Black girls and girls of color that they CAN do anything!”
💵 ‘Smarter money moves’: There’s a lot of really great advice in this edition of the NPR Life Kit newsletter, including a piece on how to make side gigs work.
🧠 ‘What does success look like?’ I also really connected with the latest version of Katie Hawkins-Gaar’s My Sweet Dumb Brain newsletter. It skillfully picks up the definition of success, turns it around and examines it from a refreshing angle.
