Tips from IRE and how journalists make money on the side
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
🍁 ‘If the U.S. wants to boost journalism, it should learn from Canada’s mistakes’: Sarah Scire wrote for Nieman Lab about the impacts of Canada’s Online News Act on the country’s news organizations and a recent report that studied tax credits’ impact on publications’ bottom line.
+ From the Toronto Star: “Google to block access to Canadian news for anyone living in Canada”
🧠 ‘The smart way to coast at work’: Rachel Feintzeig wrote for The Wall Street Journal about how to prioritize family when you need to, present your best self at work when you've got a lot going on and stay open to different opportunities.
“Even if you know you can’t take on the big new role right now, contact the hiring manager,” Feintzeig wrote. “Note that the timing isn’t right for you but that you think you’d be great in the position. Could they loop back if something similar opens up in the future?”
👀 ‘IRE23 tipsheets’: If you couldn’t make it to the Investigative Reporters & Editors annual conference, but wanted to get caught up on the highlights, there’s slides, tipsheets and more from dozens of sessions on the organization’s site.
Here’s a few session titles that stood out to me:
💸 ‘How do y’all make extra money when salaries aren’t great?’ Daric L. Cottingham tweeted a callout asking other journalists about how they earn extra income when a salaried position isn't enough. Multiple respondents shared their tips, including everything from book writing to digital marketing to teaching.
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🚶♀️ What is an ‘awe walk’? As someone who’s always on the phone when I’m outside, I really want to practice this exercise Katie Hawkins-Gaar shares in her My Sweet Dumb Brain newsletter.
🌹 The Weekly Dirt with Jessica Damiano: I’m also enjoying my former Newsday colleague’s gardening newsletter. My green thumb is lacking, and I really appreciated her insights on when to prune my roses.
🐶 Meet Wayne: I looove a Basset hound and @dog_rates delivers with this pup.
