‘How freelancers can build independent revenue streams’ and connecting with colleagues remotely
Editor’s note: I’m taking next week off to recharge and spend time with family, but I’ll be back!
In the meantime, check out this previous post with tools I created to help you better find jobs and track applications. Thanks for reading! (And if you value this newsletter, level-up with a paid subscription today for even more roundups and career advice.)
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
❓ ‘Help! How do I make friends when my coworkers are behind a screen?’ Alan Henry writes for WIRED about how to connect with new colleagues by diving into Slack channels, scheduling virtual coffees and celebrating the completion of a big project together.
💻 Join the News Product Alliance on Slack: NPA’s Slack “community is founded around the concept of Ask/Give: We welcome everyone joining our community to seek support and help, and also, to share, teach and give,” according to the organization’s site.
📝 ‘How freelancers can build independent revenue streams’: Andy Hirschfeld wrote for the International Journalists’ Network about advice for freelancers as they plan out income throughout the year from scheduling stories to grant applications to speaking opportunities.
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🗞 ‘5 pieces of good news about the news’: Ben Smith wrote for The New York Times about “some of the ventures that have sprung up, fueled by a new sense of mission in American journalism and by the sheer quantities of money available,” including Outlier Media in Detroit and The Wichita Beacon in Kansas.
📺 ‘The story behind the iconic Vietnam episode of “Hey Arnold!”’ Kimmy Yam of NBC News shared in a moving Twitter thread about her experience speaking to ‘“Hey Arnold!” creator Craig Bartlett about the Vietnam War episode on recurring character Mr. Hyunh. It aired 25 years ago and served, for many Asian Americans in the 90s, as one of the only times a piece of their history appeared in mainstream pop culture.”
👀 Binging ‘I Think You Should Leave’ on Netflix: Tim Robinson’s second season is just as over-the-top absurd as the first.
Would you like to sponsor a college or early-career journalist’s newsletter subscription?
I recently surveyed readers, asking if they needed paid edition of my newsletter, but couldn’t afford it at this time.
If you’d be interested in supporting one of the remaining 10 or so readers who need it, hit me up on Venmo (@Mandy-Hofmockel) or Zelle at mandy.hofmockel@gmail.com. And thank you!
