Planning for endings and new beginnings at work
Happy Tuesday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
đ âA new NYC salary transparency lawâ: Angela Fu wrote for Poynter about a new law in New York City that may be able to help improve pay gaps in journalism through salary range disclosures. She writes:
âBecause a large portion of the media industry is centered in New York â a 2019 Pew report found that 12% of American newsroom employees live in the city â the law could have ripple effects across the country.â
đ» Endings and beginnings at jobs: Celeste LeCompte, whoâs starting a new role at WBEZ after years at ProPublica, kicked off an interesting thread asking, âWhatâs one thing [you wish] your predecessor had done for you when you started a new job â or something that someone did that you really appreciated?â Replies included helpful notes about documentation, Slack channels and more.
Phoebe Gavin, Executive Director of Talent and Development at Vox, started a thread about the first month of her new gig âgiving you a window into what itâs like to start a job at @voxdotcom.â Itâs pretty comprehensive! Definitely worth keeping tabs on.
â° Make a plan to back up your work: Alex Sujong Laughlin, a writer and audio producer, tweeted an important reminder, âthis is your sign to start a work archive folder in your hard drive and save pdfs of all your published work AS THEY PUBLISH.â
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
đș Loki as an alligator: I finally subscribed to Disney+ and have been catching up on some Marvel movies and shows I missed over the years. Iâm currently working my way through âLokiâ and have been pretty impressed so far.
đ âLemon and garlic chicken with mushroomsâ: I made an impatient personâs version of this New York Times recipe by getting thin cut chicken breasts and trading in the mushrooms for French fries loaded with Mrs. Dash.
đ¶ âThe goodest subway boy continues to be goodâ: I still canât get over the wonderful ears on Simon, Sophie Vershbowâs adorable dog.
