‘How journalists can ward off burnout,’ starting that stop-doing list and more
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
✨ ‘How journalists can ward off burnout’: Samantha Ragland of Poynter wrote an excellent piece about “understanding trauma and practicing digital wellness” for journalists. Here’s just a snippet of her incredibly thoughtful advice:
So what are some ways to manage the impacts of the trauma and stress you’re experiencing this week — and this year?
Set realistic expectations.
Foster boredom.
Create good sleep hygiene.
🙌 ‘Prioritizing with a “Stop Doing” list’: One of my favorite pieces from the American Press Institute’s BetterNews.org is this one from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. It’s also the perfect time of year to revisit it whether you’re a manager overseeing a team, a reporter on a beat or you work in audience engagement across multiple platforms or publications.
The organization “created — and continually updates — a list of newsroom activities that don’t contribute to its audience-centric strategy in an effort to find time and resources to devote to more meaningful tasks.” After that, they took action.
📝 ‘News distrust among Black Americans is a fixable problem’: The University of Texas at Austin's Center for Media Engagement recently released a report that “asked Black Americans how news organizations could better cover their communities to help bridge the divide between them and the media.”
See how researchers defined the problem, highlighted key findings and shared implications for journalists.
Thanks for reading!
