Count down to the new year with the top resources from 2022.
Editor’s note: This newsletter will be taking the holidays off, but I plan to be back in your inboxes on Monday, January 9!
Happy (almost) New Year!
To count down to 2023, I did a content analysis of the top readings and resources subscribers engaged with throughout 2022. Here are five of the top pieces read by you and curated by me:
No. 5
👀 ‘10 red flags to watch out for in a job interview’: Executive Coach Rebecca Zucker wrote for the Harvard Business Review in June about several key moments during the interview process that can help you determine if a job is right for you.
+ Also from HuffPost: “Signs of a toxic workplace you can spot before you apply for a job”
No. 4
🗞 ‘Why leaving journalism and coming back was the right decision’: Elizabeth Djinis wrote for Poynter in February about a few journalists’ different decisions to step away from the profession, recharge after intense jobs and rejoin newsrooms on their own terms.
+ Also from Poynter: “Calculate your skills — and value — before joining the Great Resignation”
+ Also also from Poynter: “What did the pandemic do to the careers of journalists of color?”
No. 3
❓ ‘What’s causing your burnout?’ This quiz from The Wall Street Journal in February asks several simple questions about how you feel at work. It then tries to get to the root cause of what you’re experiencing — be it exhaustion, cynicism, inefficacy or a mix of the three — and offers some possible solutions.
No. 2
🙌 ‘Hype up your career’: When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Upasna Gautam, a product manager at CNN, told Sidekick in April, “Create and update your career hype doc early, consistently and often! A career hype doc documents your big and small accomplishments, and is a powerful tool to track your career progress while it’s fresh on your mind.”
This was the first time I saw an actual template to track career wins!
No. 1
👀 ‘Your career is just one-eighth of your life’: The headline alone on this piece stopped me in my tracks. Derek Thompson wrote for The Atlantic in September about “five pieces of career advice, shaped by economics, psychology and a little bit of existential math.”
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this year:
👶 Some personal news: Maggie and Sam are getting a (human) sibling! We’re having a baby in January 2023. Incredibly grateful for all the love and support.
✍️ ‘Words to cut from your writing’: Freelance writer Kaitlyn Arford shared in June more than a dozen words and phrases you can trim from your stories.
🐶 ‘We only rate dogs’: WeRateDogs tweeted in October, “This is a tiny kangaroo going through a goth phase. Please only send dogs.” You just gotta check this cutie out.
