Count down to the new year with the top resources from 2020.
Happy (almost) New Year!
To countdown to 2021, I did a content analysis of the top readings and resources subscribers engaged with throughout 2020. Here's the top five pieces read by you and curated by me:
No. 5
👀 ‘Successful Pitches shows freelancers the way’: Stephanie Russell-Kraft wrote for the Columbia Journalism Review in August about Successful Pitches, Seattle-based food writer Naomi Tomky’s “database of pitches that have successfully led to stories at a variety of publications.”
“As of late June, Successful Pitches included several dozen successful pitches from outlets including Al Jazeera, CNN, Eater, the New York Times, Teen Vogue, the Washington Post and even this one,” Kraft wrote.
No. 4
📱 ‘5 ways to demonstrate your value — remotely’: Harvard Business Review published a piece in June on “five concrete steps that you can focus on... to increase your odds of thriving in your job during this tumultuous time and demonstrating your value while working remotely.”
No. 3
📈 Advice for early-career journalists: Theodore Kim, now director of early career journalism strategy and recruiting at The New York Times, wrote in May about 5 tips for those about to “launch a journalism career in the middle of a pandemic” for Poynter.
”Your goal should be to find a newsroom job as opposed to the newsroom job, recognizing that the position you get now might very well be a placeholder for the next thing,” he wrote. “You’ll gain experience (and, hopefully, a paycheck) and you’ll position yourself for the future.”
No. 2
📝 ‘Chelsea’s guide to freelancing’: Chelsea Cirruzzo, a reporter with U.S. News & World Report, created a comprehensive 15-page Google Doc with details and advice from her past couple years freelancing, including how she got started and how she pitches, tracks work and invoices, sets rates, showcases work, manages her time and more.
No. 1
💵 ‘Here’s what a bunch of publications pay freelancers’: Nicole Clark wrote for the Substack newsletter Freelancing with Tim about rates at a variety of publications, including Texas Monthly, The Guardian, Refinery29, The Atlantic and more.
“It’s always worth it to share your rates: It helps you get better paid, it helps your peers get better paid and it helps inject some transparency into how the industry pays writers,” Clark wrote.

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this year:
👸 ‘Catherine O’Hara: The Queen of Schitt’s Creek’: She was photographed via drone for Vanity Fair. The shoot was everything Moira Rose fans could have hoped for, bébé.
🍦 NYT’s mason jar ice cream: MJ Franklin of NYT tweeted about how to make ice cream in a mason jar. “The verdict: creamier than normal ice cream but surprisingly good for how easy it was to make!” Franklin tweeted.
🐦 Regular self care reminders: If you don’t already follow Karen K. Ho on Twitter, I highly recommend it. Her account is full of gentle, helpful self care reminders to do things like drink more water, stop doomscrolling and try to go to bed early.
