👀 ‘Gannett tells its news division that more layoffs are coming’: Poynter published a story saying that Gannett’s news division is facing more layoffs in early December.
“The note did not specify a number, but communications chief Lark-Marie Anton said in an email that the target was a 6% reduction,” Rick Edmonds wrote. “With a headcount of 3,440, that would amount to roughly 200.”
But Gannett wasn’t alone. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of recent updates about other news organizations:
CNN: “Protocol, the tech-news focused website, will shutter and lay off its entire staff”
Max Tani of Semafor tweeted on Nov. 17, “Morning Brew is laying off 14% of its staff, per an internal email this morning.”
Adweek: “Outside Media lays off 12% of staff”
📝 ‘Recession-proofing your job search’: Leonor Ayala Polley, head of URL Media’s recruitment division, shared in the organization's November newsletter some context about the greater job market and added “some actionable steps you can take today to keep up the momentum during your job search.”
“Be strategic about which skills you build,” Phoebe Gavin, career and leadership coach and executive director of talent and development at Vox.com said. “Skills that help you perform better in your current job reduce your layoff risk. Skills that command a premium in the marketplace do the same while also making it easier for you to find a new job if you need to.”

💻 ‘How to escape your packed schedule and take a rest from work’: Rachel Feintzeig wrote for The Wall Street Journal that “those of us obsessed with productivity are missing out on the benefits of doing less.”
