Happy (almost) New Year!
To countdown to 2021, I did a content analysis of the top readings and resources subscribers engaged with throughout 2020. Here's the first five of the top 10 items read by you and curated by me:
No. 10
🗞 ‘Inside the revolts erupting in America’s big newsrooms’: Ben Smith wrote for The New York Times in June about how “staff members’ demands helped end the tenure of James Bennet as Opinion editor of The New York Times. And they are generating tension at The Washington Post. Part of the story starts in Ferguson, Mo.”
No. 9
📧 Other journalism jobs newsletters: If you’re actively job hunting or on the lookout for freelance opportunities, I recommend signing up for some of these other great newsletters:
‘Opportunities of the Week’ by Sonia Weiser
‘West Coast Media Jobs’ by Mallory Carra
‘Missed Pitches’ by Luis Gomez
No. 8
💻 ‘How to start a new job during a pandemic’: The New York Times published a piece in August with some great tips on how to quickly get acclimated at a new gig, including ways to pick up on workplace culture, getting to know new colleagues, onboarding easily and more.
No. 7
🧠 ‘How to get in the mindset of your interviewer’: Fast Company published a piece with tips on how to put your best self forward during a virtual interview, including highlighting your strengths, coming in confident and showing an openness to change.
No. 6
📉 ‘Your “surge capacity” is depleted — It’s why you feel awful’: Tara Haelle wrote for Medium's Elemental about “how to pull yourself out of despair and live your life.”
Haelle shares a deeply personal experience dealing with the loss of normalcy, finding ways to cope and beginning to build “your resilience bank account.”
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this year:
🥚 Taking crafting to a whole new level: Lila Seidman, a reporter with The Los Angeles Times, tweeted “my new ‘thing’ is painting egg portraits of everyone in my germ bubble.” And they are incredible.
🤷♀️ ‘Am I doing enough?’: I love this simple site that reminds us all “It’s okay to not be okay” (h/t to Nana aba Duncan).
🐶 *Insert puppy dog eyes here* The most adorably serious dog wants to have a talk with you.
