📆 ‘A month of paid leave was transformative for my workplace’: Ko Bragg wrote for Teen Vogue about the restorative impact of Scalawag Magazine’s decision to give its staff a fully paid month off at the end of 2021.
“The hiatus gave our majority queer and Black staff permission to let our minds wander during long baths, make a dent in our bedside book piles and explore who we are beyond what we do,” Bragg wrote.
❓ ‘What’s causing your burnout?’ This quiz from The Wall Street Journal asks several simple questions about how you feel at work. It then tries to get to the root cause of what you’re experiencing — be it exhaustion, cynicism, inefficacy or a mix of the three — and offers some possible solutions.
🗞 ‘Why leaving journalism and coming back was the right decision’: Elizabeth Djinis wrote for Poynter about a few journalists’ different decisions to step away the profession, recharge after intense jobs and rejoin newsrooms on their own terms.
+ Also from Poynter: “What did the pandemic do to the careers of journalists of color?”

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me recently:
🥇 ‘I’m a rocket man’: I’m still in awe of Nathan Chen’s incredible gold-medal-winning free skate.
📧 A new newsletter mini-course: I’m pretty excited about a 7-day email series we’re launching at work called Cannabis CT. Now that cannabis is legal in Connecticut, we’re working to provide readers with everything they’ll need to know – new rules, dispensary locations, medical marijuana and more.
📺 ‘Murderville’: We binged Will Arnett’s “improvisational crime comedy,” and got a kick out of Kumail Nanjiani giggling his way through his episode.
