Advice for more thoughtful reporting and improving your resume
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
đ âWant a new journalism job? âCrawlâ your resume firstâ: Samantha Ragland of Poynter wrote for The Cohort newsletter about what should and shouldnât make it onto your resume.
âAs women, and women of color especially, thereâs this pull to share everything, to be better than the competition by making our work history a sort of buffet of skills,â Ragland wrote. âBut we need to get comfortable deleting whatâs not imperative to attaining our goal. This helps us and the hiring manager see the path more clearly.âÂ
đ Advice for more thoughtful reporting: Nicole Santa Cruz, a reporter with ProPublica, requested some advice on Twitter before âtalking to young journalists about interviewing with sensitivity⊠â whatâs your best/most useful tip for talking to people who have just experienced one of the worst events of their lives?â
There were dozens of replies filled with thoughtful notes on everything from letting the source drive the conversation to remembering that they don't have to talk to you to expressing empathy.
đ âHow The 19th* learned from early mistakes and revised its growth planâ: Amanda Zamora, co-founder at The 19th*, shared what worked and what didnât in the nonprofit news organizationâs first year on LION Publishers News Guest podcast.
âWe came up with a three-year plan and I think it was laughably simplistic,â she told Outlier Media Executive Director Candice Fortman on the podcast. â[I wish] we would have recognized how much the operational side of things needed some tending.â
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
đ» Another great SRCCON: I really enjoyed the time I got to spend at SRCCONâs virtual conference this year. Itâs one of the most inclusive and thoughtfully organized conferences Iâve been to, and I highly recommend keeping an eye out for future events.
đ A fun way to brainstorm with your team: If youâre working remotely, try Googleâs Jamboard to get that creative energy going.
đ§ Looking for a new OOO message? I like the personalized example that Dan Oshinsky, who runs Inbox Collective, shared on his blog.
