Tips for freelancers and ‘10 women to watch’
Happy Tuesday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
📆 Tips for freelancers halfway through 2021: Kaitlyn Arford shared advice for freelance journalists to reset by requesting referrals, raising rates, adding clips to your website and more.
🤷♀️ How should you set rates as a consultant? Corinne Podger, Reuters & BBC Certified Training Consultant, broke down in detail how to figure out what to charge a client for a service by researching, determining your target salary, adding in a little math and strategy and more. (h/t to Samantha Ragland for sharing!)
👀 ‘10 women to watch’: Editor & Publisher shared Q&As with amazing women “breaking barriers and leading the charge in local and national news,” including Danielle Belton, editor-in-chief of HuffPost; Monica R. Richardson, executive editor of the Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald and McClatchy Florida regional editor; Amanda Zamora, co-founder and publisher of The 19th; and others.
“Try everything and don’t be afraid to fail at anything. Failure is a huge part of success,” Belton said. “I’ve been laid off. I’ve been forced out. I’ve been passed over. And in the end, all of it made me better, stronger and more capable as a journalist. Failures are lessons.”
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
😁 ‘NPR’s joy generator’: I love this series of visual essays, interactives, sounds and more from NPR.
🧘♀️ ‘Anxiety release meditation’: As Jacqué Palmer says, “bookmark this for your sanity.”
🐢 Taking in a little nature on a walk: We saw some snapping turtles in the parklet down the street. They swam over to check us out but stayed in the water.
Would you like to sponsor a college or early-career journalist’s newsletter subscription?
I recently surveyed readers, asking if they needed paid edition of my newsletter, but couldn’t afford it at this time.
If you’d be interested in supporting one of the remaining dozen or so readers who need it, hit me up on Venmo (@Mandy-Hofmockel) or Zelle at mandy.hofmockel@gmail.com. And thank you!
