Trainings on SEO best practices and how to better cover LGBTQ+ communities
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
đ âHow to improve your coverage of LGBTQ+ communitiesâ: Poynter is offering a free webinar â moderated by Poynterâs Joie Chen and featuring instructors Sharif Durhams, NLGJA president and managing editor of The News & Observer and the Herald-Sun, and Ashley Dye, engagement editor at the Tampa Bay Times â on Monday, October 25, at 2 p.m. ET.
During the training, âjournalists will learn how to accurately cover and meaningfully engage LGBTQ+ people,â the course description says.
đ» âIntermediate SEO training for audience developmentâ: The Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY will host a free training via zoom on Thursday, October 28, at 2 p.m. ET, featuring Claudio Cabrera of The New York Times.
The training will review SEO best practices, and Cabrera will offer his feedback on articles submitted by registrants.
â â4 things to ask yourself when your pitch is rejectedâ: Tim Herrera wrote in his Freelancing with Tim newsletter about how to take a thoughtful step back and troubleshoot whether you pitched the right organization, whether your story idea is clear enough and more. I also love this line from the piece:
âA bad pitch is not the same thing as a bad story idea, and a no from one editor is not a blanket no to an idea.â
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
đ âCardi, you wanna do a scene with some snakes?â: Loved this episode of âHot Onesâ featuring Megan Thee Stallion where she talks about her love of horror and anime and takes watchers behind the scenes of the âWAPâ music video.
đ Elephants absolutely destroying giant pumpkins: They smooshed them, kicked them and noshed on them.
đ Good boys love fall walks: Excuse me while I live vicariously through Samâs love of the outdoors.
