✍️ ‘Five rules for getting a job in journalism in 2021’: Dan Oshinsky, who runs an email consultancy and has worked for places like BuzzFeed and The New Yorker, shared some thoughts on his blog about landing that first post-grad role. Tips include having a side project, checking out some smaller outlets and keeping in touch with your contacts.
✨ ‘Work can wait. Your mental health can’t.’ Katie Hawkins-Gaar, who writes a newsletter you should totally subscribe to called “My Sweet Dumb Brain,” shared strategies in a piece for CNN about how to get the most out of a break from work, including ways to craft a plan for your absence, be present with your feelings and set yourself up for success when you do go back.
“If we don’t take care of ourselves, we can’t take care of other things — including our jobs,” Hawkins-Gaar wrote. “As we continue to readjust to life after lockdown, I hope we can all find ways to attend to our mental wellbeing and to encourage others to do the same.”

P.S. Here are a few Pulitzer Prize tweets that stood out to me this week:
📱 Darnella Frazier, who recorded George Floyd’s murder, receives Pulitzer special citation: Stacy-Marie Ishmael tweeted of Frazier, “This is a recognition, as it should be, that newsrooms owe credit and recognition and professional gratitude to the people who do the legwork—not just the ‘credentialed’ professional corps—on which so much of our work relies.”
🙌 ‘Their work depends on a community’: Ed Yong of The Atlantic wrote, “I’ll be splitting the prize money between everyone who worked on my pieces last year—every editor, copy editor, fact checker, artist and more.”
🐶 ‘tfw you realize you live in a Pulitzer Prize-winning home’: Susan is most definitely a good girl.
