‘Four things to do in a money crunch’ and a template to track career wins
Editor’s note: This newsletter will be taking next Monday off so I can spend some much needed time with family, but I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, May 9.
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
👀 ‘Four things to do in a money crunch’: Writer Jen A. Miller shared in her newsletter, Notes from a Hired Pen, four steps she took after hitting multiple unexpected expenses and late payments at the same time, including doing a review of her financial situation and sending marketing emails to existing and potential clients.
+ Also from Miller: Subscribe to her newsletter and check out her ebooks ($10 each) about freelance writing best practices
💻 ‘How to set healthy boundaries when starting a new job’: Executive coach and author Melody Wilding wrote for Harvard Business Review about how “failing to set boundaries early on in a new job is not only exhausting, but it also traps you into high expectations that you need to continually live up to, which can be demoralizing and unsustainable.”
+ Also from HBR: “Do you feel guilty all the time?”
+ Also also from HBR: “How I manage my social anxiety at work”
🙌 ‘Hype up your career’: When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Upasna Gautam, a product manager at CNN, told Sidekick, “Create and update your career hype doc early, consistently and often! A career hype doc documents your big and small accomplishments, and is a powerful tool to track your career progress while it’s fresh on your mind.”
This is the first time I’ve seen an actual template to track career wins!
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
📺 ‘Abbott Elementary’: Quinta Brunson is the best in this Philly-based mockumentary. Can’t believe I just started watching.
✨ ‘Yes, you can be more than your job title’: This is something I’m admittedly bad at, but Rachel Feintzeig’s column gave me a lot to think about.
🐶 A dog photo gone viral: The rainbow in the background really makes it.
