Career fairs and how to leverage pay data
Happy Tuesday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
📝 ‘How to ask for a raise, without alienating your boss along the way’: The New York Times recently published a series of stories on salary discussions and transparency, including one piece with “tips from psychologists, managers and people who have successfully asked what can feel like a very difficult question.”
See more of the series (I’ve used gift article links here for greater accessibility):
“27 people on the streets of New York talk about how much money they make”
“Sex, death, affairs: Everything people would rather talk about than money”
👀 ‘My $126,844 freelance year’: Writer Jen A. Miller described in her newsletter, Notes from a Hired Pen, how her income changed in recent years and shared a pie chart breaking down her sources of revenue.
“This is my second best freelancing year ever, of 16 years being a full time freelancer,” Miller wrote. “Hooray! Maybe I'll beat $135k again, but I also work a lot less now than I did in 2019, which is a win for me. I’m glad that after two years of declines, I bounced back up a bit.”

📆 ‘2023 Virtual News Career Fair’: McClatchy is hosting a virtual career fair from January 31 to February 2, according to a post on JournalismJobs.com. Sign up by Friday, January 20.
“We’re hiring for more than 100 newsroom jobs and internships,” the post says. “With opportunities ranging from entry level to leadership, we are hiring reporters, editors, visual storytellers, software engineers, data analysts and more. Please register for a conversation and we’ll schedule you for an interview.”
+ ONA is also hosting a career day on March 9. Sign up to find out when registration opens.
💻 A live resume workshop: Career and Leadership Coach Phoebe Gavin is hosting a live resume workshop on Wednesday, January 18, at 2 p.m. ET to “help you jump into the minds of recruiter and hiring managers so you can craft a resume that grabs their attention and tells your story in their language.” The workshop and replay costs $49.

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🙌 How to make your to-do lists more doable: A recent edition of NPR’s Life Kit newsletter offered some great advice on “a more effective way to write [your] to-do list.”
♥️ Making some veggie lasagna: I’ve been meaning to tackle this recipe for weeks, and I’m excited to finally dig into NYT’s lasagna with spinach and roasted zucchini.
🐶 Meet Fred: This baby Basset Hound @dog_rates shared on Twitter is the most adorable creature you’ll see this week.
