Two resources for learning more about AI tools in news
Editor’s note: Please consider subscribing to the paid tier of this newsletter to support all the work I put into this free resource each week. Each month you’ll get two extra editions full of career advice and Q&As with industry leaders.
Happy Tuesday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
🤖 ‘How to use ChatGPT and other generative AI tools in your newsrooms’: The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) where students “will learn about the types of artificial intelligence that can be leveraged across news operations, how to implement and work with this technology and how the next few years might unfold for the technology and industry.”
The course, led by Aimee Rinehart of the Associated Press and Sil Hamilton of Hacks/Hackers, starts September 25 and runs through October 22.
🤝 ‘Networking is a long game’: Rhema Thompson Bland, Deputy Director of News Talent Acquisition & Development for McClatchy, shared four thoughtful pieces of advice on LinkedIn about networking in journalism, including understanding that “a great conversation with an editor, recruiter, etc., isn’t always going to lead directly to a job, but it can lead to a great memory in the minds of influential people.”
🤖 Want to learn even more about AI in news? Data scientist and media entrepreneur Nikita Roy hosts the podcast Newsroom Robots where speakers explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and news. Guests come from The Texas Tribune, the AI + Automation Lab at German Public Broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Associated Press and more.

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🗞 ‘The most powerful news interpretation of this event’: Amaris Castillo of Poynter spoke with the students behind that viral Daily Tar Heel front page following a fatal shooting at UNC.
♥️ ‘You are a gift’:
