👀 ‘Freelance writing for laid-off journalists (and those who want to quit)’: Freelancer Jen A. Miller recently published a new ebook that gives freelancers the “tools you need to make this work, from how to find clients you don’t need to pitch, to how to handle an uneven income.”
+ Sign up for Miller’s newsletter, “Notes from a Hired Pen”
📝 ‘New ways of elevating your reporting and engaging audiences’: The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) where students will learn about “the concept and practice of solutions journalism” from Hugo Balta, publisher of Illinois Latino News.
The course runs from today through June 4.
📱 ‘What to do about a boss who’s pinging you at all hours’: Rachel Feintzeig wrote for The Wall Street Journal about “ways to conquer the torrent of round-the-clock messages.”
+ Also from WSJ: “How big companies choose who is laid off”
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me during my maternity leave:
♥️ Time with Baby H: I’m so grateful for all the memories my husband and I made, watching our little one go from a newborn to a roly-poly three-month-old. It’s been the best and most exhausting time of my life.
🎶 Tunes that lived rent free in my head: The first few weeks after we came home from the hospital, the choruses of “Where Is My Mind?” by the Pixies and Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” kept bumping around in my brain. Now Barney’s “The Clean Up Song” is the main tune that makes Baby H smile ear to ear.
👀 ‘The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie and Katya’: I stumbled across this endlessly entertaining podcast featuring two “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” alums, authors and actors.
