Note: I've got some fun personal news in this edition!
Do you enjoy all the work I put into this newsletter? Subscribe today to the paid edition for two more newsletters packed with career advice each month!
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
💵 ‘How to prepare your finances before quitting your job’: Julia Carpenter wrote for The Wall Street Journal about “what to do about your finances before embarking on the slowdown you’ve been craving.”
❓What do you wish you knew when you were starting out?: Jaden Amos of USA Today started a robust discussion on Twitter when she asked, “What’s one piece of advice you would give a college journalist?”
Hundreds chimed in with feedback on everything from declining unpaid internships to making sure you eat and sleep so you don’t burn out to valuing relevant work experience over good grades.
📝 ‘How to ask for more money — and actually get it’: Tim Herrera’s newsletter Freelancing with Tim is back! And and he’s got lots of actionable advice for freelancers about when and how to request for higher rates for assignments.
“No need to apologize for asking, no need to couch it in soft language,” Herrera wrote. “It’s an editor’s job to deal with budget issues, and this is a budget issue. So just ask!”
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
📱 Comedy on Netflix: If you’re a stand-up fan, check out Phil Wang’s special. I’ve been missing new shows and this one was a fun way to spend an hour.
🌽 Focaccia and wax beans and corn, oh my! Got a chance to soak in a farmers market this weekend and loved every minute of it.
🐸 Follow Frog and Toad bot: I really love this Twitter account that shares snippets from the children’s books “Frog and Toad.” When I see them, they make me stop, think and feel just a little more relaxed.
Will you help me make this newsletter better?
I’d love to hear from you on how I can make this newsletter more helpful to you and other journalists like you! Will you do me a big favor and take my five-minute survey?
Thank you so much for your time and help!
