Plus: Getting and following through on an informational interview
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
❓ ‘5 questions to ask during an informational interview’: Harvard Business Review published a helpful primer for how to get and follow through on an informational interview if you’re unfamiliar with the practice.
“Career conversations are a means to informally learn about roles, organizations and industries,” wrote Sean O’Keefe, a professor and researcher. “They’re also a strategic way to develop internal advocates, provide you knowledge needed to land positions you are seeking and be referred into formal interview processes.”
📝 ‘Successful leaders of color need a deep bench of support’: Emma Carew Grovum wrote for the Reynolds Journalism Institute about how “it’s time to think about mentoring and coaching as a team sport, not 1 to 1.”
She includes definitions for mentors, coaches and sponsors and a helpful template for journalists of color to draw out their support structure.
👥 ‘Comparison is what we do when we’re learning something new’: Jenni Gritters, a business coach for freelancers and small business owners, tweeted a short thread full of great reminders about what comparison is and isn’t useful for. Check it out!
💻 ‘The 3 questions you should end every interview with’: Tim Herrera wrote in his Freelancing with Tim newsletter about how to diversify your source pool and find leads to new story ideas by ending interviews with these three simple questions.
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🌌 ‘Revenge bedtime procrastination’: Anne Helen Petersen wrote in her Culture Study newsletter about the origins of the term, why we do it and how we might look at these actions through a different lens.
📺 ‘You know you’re a zaddy’: The amazing Phoebe Robinson stopped by Stephen Colbert’s show to talk about her new book, Bono and her “Thirsty Thursday” Instagram posts.
🎃 Meet Edna, Charlotte and the pumpkettes: It’s getting spooky at my house.
