Happy (almost) New Year!
To count down to 2025, I did a content analysis of the top readings and resources subscribers engaged with throughout 2024. Here’s the top five items read by you and curated by me:
No. 5
‘10 ways to support your mental health’: The New York Times published a piece last December with “simple and proven strategies [that] will help you manage stress and find meaning in the new year” ranging from a breathing exercise to an approach to cleaning up.
No. 4
Internships, fellowships and conferences calendar: Just a reminder that I’ve updated this calendar with multiple new roles. Please feel free to share with anyone who could use it!
No. 3
‘Why the reliable office workhorse rarely gets ahead’: Rachel Feintzeig wrote for The Wall Street Journal in August about how “working too hard can hurt your career trajectory, but there are other paths to office stardom.”
+ Also from WSJ: “How to break up with your career”
+ Also from WSJ: “Your résumé might be getting tossed by AI. How to push back.”
+ Also from WSJ: “The trick to bragging in a job interview”
No. 2
How to write a good story in 800 words or less’: Poynter republished a piece by Roy Peter Clark in January featuring 9 tips from the writing coach ranging from “experiment[ing] with the forms of short writing that already exist” to playing with the inverted pyramid.
No. 1
‘What do YOU bring to the outlet?’ Jeong Park, now of The Seattle Times, shared some cover letter advice on X in February, including how to craft a narrative to capture a hiring manager’s attention, link it to the role and illustrate that you understand the outlet’s coverage.
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this year:
Expecting baby No. 2: We’re excited to welcome our second child in early 2025!
‘The story of the journalism jobs market’: I spoke with Feven Merid of the Columbia Journalism Review about trends in the job market and how this newsletter got started.
‘The case for “slow productivity” at work’: Rachel Feintzeig wrote for The Wall Street Journal in April, saying, “we’re thinking about productivity at work all wrong, Cal Newport says. But how do we tell the boss that?”
