‘How callouts make you a better journalist’ and the importance of obituaries in local news
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
🗣 ‘How callouts make you a better journalist’: Bobby Blanchard of the Texas Tribune shared an excellent thread with specific examples on how to use callouts to connect with your audience and inform and strengthen reporting. He wrote:
This is the fundamental loop of Audience Engagement Journalism:
You ask your readers for help doing journalism.
Your readers answer your questions.
You use those answers to empower / inform your reporting.
You report back out to the community that helped you.
You hear how your audience responds to what you report back and use that to ask a new question. Start again. Repeat until we’ve solved all the world’s problems.
📈 ‘The New Rules of Business: How to Report on ESG’: The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing is hosting a panel on how “environmental, social and corporate governance topics are increasingly shaping the way businesses operate and where investors direct their dollars.”
Journalists from Vogue Business, Bloomberg, Financial Times, CQ Roll Call and more will speak at 2 p.m. on March 3. Register here.
♥️ The importance of obituaries in local news: Kristen Hare of Poynter has been writing obituaries for the Tampa Bay Times for a while and is publicly sharing what she’s learned about inclusivity, audience engagement and more.
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🎟 ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’: Daniel Kaluuya gave a powerful performance as Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party.
🎶 ‘We’re about to get the bridge of our lives’: We’re all just Bowen Yang letting loose while listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” in this SNL sketch.
😸 ‘When you’re waiting for edits on a Friday’: Olivia Sanchez of Capital Gazette tweeted a photo of a cat who’s in no mood to rework this story.
