Journalism jobs at HuffPost, CalMatters, Poynter, Education Week and more
Count down to the new year with the top resources from 2021.
Editor’s note: This newsletter will be taking a week off, but I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, January 3!
Happy (almost) New Year!
To countdown to 2022, I did a content analysis of the top readings and resources subscribers engaged with throughout 2021. Here’s five of the top pieces read by you and curated by me:
No. 5
💵 ‘How to prepare your finances before quitting your job’: Julia Carpenter wrote in September for The Wall Street Journal about “what to do about your finances before embarking on the slowdown you’ve been craving.”
+ Also from WSJ: “How honest should you be during your exit interview?”
No. 4
🙌 Improving internship applications: Gwendolyn Wu now of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted in January an excellent thread sharing internship application dos and don’ts after the Houston Chronicle “received more than 250 applications for our summer 2021 internship this year.”
“Don’t regurgitate your resume in the cover letter… Tell us what’s driving you to be a journalist, and why Houston. Show us your personality. All of our final summer internship candidates did that in their letters.”
No. 3
✨ Breaking the procrastination cycle: I love this mindful exercise from Phoebe Gavin in May. Check out the thread for a few questions to ask yourself the next time you start procrastinating.
+ Also from Phoebe: “Create a professional resume website that gets you jobs”
No. 2
📱 Excellent job application advice: P. Kim Bui of The Arizona Republic shared a Twitter thread in March filled with “things I have learned from taking a bunch of coaching calls with JOC job seekers.”
+ Also from Kim: “#journojobs tip: If you are bilingual or have some other amazing skill, put it in your twitter bio.”
+ Also also from Kim: A thoughtful series called “Sincerely, Leaders of Color” that she, Emma Carew Grovum and others publish on Source.
No. 1
♥️ ‘What you do is not who you are’: Tim Herrera wrote in February at length for NYT about thinking through your identity in relation to work, compartmentalizing it from other aspects of your life and establishing healthy boundaries.
“Experts say it’s important to protect yourself from letting problems in one area of your life affect the other areas, especially now that the borders between every aspect of our lives are blurrier than ever,” he wrote.
“A bad week at work is a drag on your mental health, but if your work is only a part of your identity, and not defining it completely, the overall emotional impact of that bad week is less severe.”
+ Also from Tim: Check out the Freelancing with Tim newsletter, which includes great editions like “How to ask for more money — and actually get it,” “9 reasons your pitch was rejected” and “How this freelancer made $27,000 in 1 month.”
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this year:
🎶 ‘Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Joleeeeene’: Love love Lil Nas X’s rendition of one of Dolly Parton’s signature songs.
🧘♀️ ‘Anxiety release meditation’: As Jacqué Palmer said, “bookmark this for your sanity.”
📧 Looking for a new OOO message? I like the personalized example that Dan Oshinsky, who runs Inbox Collective, shared on his blog.
