🗞 ‘We need to be the paper of interest’: Laura Hazard Owen wrote for NiemanLab about what top editors at The Boston Globe, The Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Seattle Times and Gannett / the USA Today Network said “their biggest opportunities and challenges” are.

“It’s become very clear that our younger new subscribers are going to demand that we cover social justice movements, that we reach out to underrepresented communities, that we hold ourselves accountable for the work we do and the work we don’t do,” said Michele Matassa Flores, executive editor of The Seattle Times.

❓ What’s a freelancer to do when asked to go faster? Kaitlyn Arford shared some great advice for other freelancers when they’re asked to complete work early. Arford also answered questions in the replies about how to handle an assignment that’s rushed from the start or what to say if you’re not able to turn in work early.

Your client wants the piece early? That’s cool. “I can have this to you by X. I charge a rush fee of 50%, which in this case would be $X. Does that work for you?” Your client decides to either pay you more or be comfortable with the original deadline.

👀 ‘How to use social media to find freelance work’: Speaking of Kaitlyn, she and Tim Herrera are teaming up “for a workshop on using social media to find work as a freelancer and how it can help you build a sustainable — and profitable! — business” on May 24 at 4 p.m. ET.
