Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
💰 ‘Personal finance tips for student journalists’: Taylor Blatchford, who runs The Lead newsletter, interviewed Julia Carpenter of The Wall Street Journal about “advice for young journalists on negotiating, budgeting, benefits and more.” And honestly there’s great reminders in here even if you’ve been in the field a little while.
“I also wish I’d known that journalism is an industry in which you can negotiate your salary. I didn’t negotiate for my first five years!” Carpenter said. “I didn’t know I could and there was that wiggle room.”
💻 ‘How to land a job at Los Angeles Times’: Students and emerging journalists can sign up for a virtual event with Angel Jennings, the Los Angeles Times’ assistant managing editor of culture and talent, to find out more about internships and fellowships at the news outlet. The first session is on Thursday, September 9.
📝 ‘Many journalists of color are creating a niche through freelancing’: Gwen Aviles, a freelance journalist, wrote for NBCU Academy about how “journalists from minoritized backgrounds who are seeking flexibility, creative freedom and entrance to spaces they’ve often been denied” have been turning to freelancing.
Aviles also shares multiple tools for freelancers and strategies for how to approach the work from others in the field.
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🐶 This dog doesn’t care about your forecast: 12/10 would have them interrupt weather announcements again.
🌀 ‘Kate still a poorly organized depression’: The comments on some of these National Hurricane Center tweets hit a little too close to home.
🏒 ‘Untold: Crime and Penalties’: My new home state popped up in a Netflix documentary on the Danbury Trashers. “The made-for-Hollywood story of a minor league hockey team known for its brawls, the 17-year-old president and general manager and the downward spiral brought on by the team’s owner with mafia ties being indicted was a quick hit,” my colleague Dan Brechlin wrote about it.
