📅 It’s that time of year again: NiemanLab has started sharing its predictions for 2021. Here’s just a few of them published so far that have caught my eye:
“More journalists of color become newsroom founders” by John Ketchum of the American Journalism Project
“The bundle gets bundled” by Ryan Kellett of The Washington Post
“Get representative, or die trying” by Hadjar Benmiloud of Vileine
🙌 RFA to place 300 journalists: Report for America has opened applications for its 2021-2022 corps members. The organization tweeted that its looking to place more than 300 journalists at 200 news organizations across the country. Apply by Jan. 31.
⚖️ ‘Navigating legal challenges in journalism’: Poynter is offering a webinar on Tuesday, Dec. 15, for journalists that will help them “learn strategies to help your news organization handle tricky legal situations, including accusations of libel and slander.”
In addition to learning from The Center for Investigative Reporting's experience in managing their own libel suit, students will have the opportunity to pose questions to the instructors.
The course is tuition-free, but the organization suggests donating $15 when you enroll.
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
♥ ‘As a stepparent, Kamala Harris puts “families you choose” in the spotlight’: Juana Summers of NPR produced this lovely piece on how "when Harris takes office in January, she herself will shatter historic barriers. Her family will also highlight something else: one of the many different ways in which families are made.”
👟 Another fitness app: I’m giving Peloton’s fitness app a whirl. It’s free for 30 days on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. So far I’ve really enjoyed the outdoor running classes.
🍗 ‘Don’t call me crouton’: If you’re a fan of Lifetime and/or Mario Lopez, “A Recipe for Seduction” is probably the silliest 15 minutes you can spend this week.
