💻 ‘How freelance journalists adapted to make it through 2020’: Poynter published a piece with advice from five freelancers about “how they managed the ups and downs of a chaotic year,” including career pivots, shifting priorities and income streams around and more.
“Staying in place brought Los Angeles-based journalist Lucy Sherriff some new perspective, too. She started looking closer to home when several of her international reporting trips were canceled. ‘Not being able to travel, I’ve found amazing, local stories I wouldn’t have otherwise,’ she said.”
🗞 ‘An apology from The Kansas City Star’: In late December, The Kansas City Star published “the story of a powerful local business that has done wrong… That business is The Kansas City Star.”
📝 ‘How to freelance as a student’: Izzie Ramirez, who is studying science journalism at Columbia, wrote on Medium about the strategies she used to freelance while taking a full course load.
Her advice includes reading up on the publications you want to pitch, possibly pitching class assignments for publication and keeping a schedule.
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me recently:
🥞 Lemon ricotta pancakes: These were awesome when I made them for family over the holidays. You do have to scroll forever to get to the recipe at the bottom, but it’s so worth it.
🥾‘You gotta work the angles’: Allison Janney made a cameo in a floor-length evening gown to do demo on HGTV's “Property Brothers.” It was wonderful.
🐶 A dog on the field: Reuters tweeted a video after “a dog invaded a professional soccer match in Potosi, Bolivia, halting play for around three minutes.”
