A virtual career fair, rethinking traditional work structures and improving DEI in newsrooms
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
š» A virtual career fair: Hearst Connecticut Media, where I work, owns 8 daily and 14 weekly papers and is the largest local news group in the state. We're having a virtual career fair at a time when weāre hiring for multiple reporter and editor positions in news, features and sports.
Itās on Thursday, Dec. 10. Those who are interested in attending can send us their resume ahead of time if they would like to be considered for an informational interview.
Help us spread the word by sharing with those who might be interested. And thanks!
š āPandemic expedites rethink on 9-to-5 work structuresā: Digiday published a piece on how āthe stigma which once existed around working fewer hours, working from home, or having to leave the office early to pick up kids, has been eroded in the last nine months.ā
š āThe moral argument for diversity in newsrooms is also a business argumentā: Nieman Lab published a story by Nicole A. Childers on the barriers to progress around diversity in newsrooms, the added difficulties that journalists of color often encounter, positive change made by some organization and potential paths forward.
Childers wrote:
āCreating a safe space for people from marginalized communities is integral to retaining them. That work starts with newsroom leaders being clear in their actions and expectations about what it really means to have a diverse and inclusive newsroom and making sure it is reflected in more than just hiring practices or establishing diversity quotas for sources.ā
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
š„ A salad to brighten winter blues: So I canāt remember exactly where I originally saw this recipe, but this one is pretty close. The version I make includes spinach, pears, pomegranate, feta, almonds and whatever berries are on sale with Balsamic dressing.
šµ āGirl put your sweatpants onā: So @therealrahulrai is officially my new favorite TikTok account if for no other reason than this gem.
ā„ļø Some advice to help you through this week: Allison Carter of IndyStar tweeted this thoughtful note: "Things are hard. Everyone is going through a lot. Recognize that your best isnāt always possible and try your best for today."
