Tips on asking about a raise and making it easy for hiring managers to connect
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
💵 ‘How to ask for a raise’: Lauren Migaki, Life Kit Host and NPR Education Producer, talked through everything from what to wear to how to prepare when you go to ask for a salary bump.
“Your boss might have more power than you, but recognize that your experience and the value you bring is leverage,” Migaki said.
👀 Making it easy for hiring managers to connect: P. Kim Bui, Director of Audience Innovation at the Arizona Republic, tweeted last week that she was doing some recruiting and offered a couple tips, including how to make it easy for potential hiring managers to contact you through a portfolio or DMs.
Bui also tweeted, “If you are bilingual or have some other amazing skill, put it in your Twitter bio.”
📝 ‘Getting a source to “yes”’: Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow Melba Newsome wrote for RJI about how newsrooms need to put in the work to make “their reporting more reflective of the communities they cover” by training staff, building trust and talking to sources about the journalistic process:
Whether they are real people sharing their experiences or subject matter experts, few people who don’t work in media know what to expect when they agree to be interviewed... Part of our job as journalists is to explain the process so that when the assignment is over, the source doesn’t feel misled or disappointed in the end result.
📱 How the Dallas Morning News used Instagram for Texas’ storm: Mallorie Sullivan of DMN could teach a masterclass in how local news outlets should use Instagram. She pulled back the curtain on how the newsroom used the platform in the wake of Texas’ massive power outages to inform and engage audiences.

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🐦 ‘It’s a baby ostrich!’ Sometimes I fall down YouTube rabbit holes. This old clip from “The Tonight Show” featuring Kevin Hart and Jimmy Fallon freaking out as then 14-year-old Robert Irwin teaches them about some awesome animals is the best.
🍄 Quick, easy mushroom quesadillas: Love this recipe from NYT’s cooking. It’s tasty and fast enough that you can make them on a weeknight.
🐶 ‘bark loudly. but at nothing’: Thoughts of Dog shared every pupper’s complex, never-ending to do list.
🎉 Thank you, all 8,000 of you!
As we cross another milestone together, I’m so grateful to this wonderful community and all your incredibly gracious notes over the years. I do all this work each week to help journalists across the country and appreciate feedback on how I can continue to better serve you all.
If you value this newsletter, I hope you’ll consider a paid subscription for just $36/year!
