Navigating LinkedIn as a journalist and pitch guides for freelancers
Happy Tuesday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
🐶 Dynamic dog writers: Turning passion into profit: Join animal welfare writer Lavanya Sunkara for a discussion with journalists Sassafras Lowrey, Kaitlyn Wells and myself about how we leveraged our love of animals into new revenue streams.
Register for the free session set for Tuesday, September 13, at 5:30 p.m. ET.

📝 ‘60+ pitching guides’: Tim Herrera recently updated his extensive list of dozens of pitch guides for freelancers, including links for Bon Appétit, Vox, Wirecutter, Columbia Journalism Review and more.
📰 ‘Charlotte Observer’s [leader] reflects on her first year as executive editor’: Rana Cash recently spoke with Gwendolyn Glenn of WFAE about the past year in Charlotte, North Carolina; her start in sports journalism; and the organization's ability to cover a more diverse, continually changing city.
“I was often one of few people of color and one of few women in press boxes when I covered SEC football, you know, traveling all around the Southeast,” Cash said. “There just weren't very many people who looked like me. But I was welcomed and, you know, supported by other journalism colleagues.”
💻 ‘Search tips for LinkedIn’: The Global Investigative Journalism Network is hosting a workshop that will instruct attendees on “how to track people and companies across the platform, find out what individuals and companies post online on specific topics and figure out who is part of a specific LinkedIn group without being a member.”
Thanks for reading!

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
♥️ Remembering a life lived: My grandmother, Marie Hofmockel, died recently at 91. She was an incredible caregiver, wife, mom and grandmother with a strong independent spirit. She’ll be very missed.
📧 An ONA OJA finalist: Thrilled for my team at Hearst Connecticut to be named a finalist for its first ONA Online Journalism Award. Cannabis CT was nominated for Excellence in Newsletters.
😮 An escape artist: Unbeknownst to her family, this dog’s apparently been letting herself out for some time on the roof.
