‘How to ask for a raise’ and tips for starting a new job remotely
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
✨ ‘How to ask for a raise’: Author Alison Green wrote for The Cut about key strategies and tactics for the raise process, including when to ask, how to get ready for the meeting and what to do during the discussion.
“Even if your manager doesn’t ultimately say yes, you’re not likely to damage your relationship by making the request, as long as (a) you’re not asking for an amount that’s wildly out of sync with the market for your work, and (b) you have a track record of strong work,” Green wrote. “You aren’t likely to fall out of favor simply because you asked to revisit your compensation.”
🗞 ‘How to get hired in a pandemic at The Wall Street Journal’: Sarah Rabil, Assistant Managing Editor of Talent at The Wall Street Journal, is speaking to the Newswomen’s Club of New York on April 28 at 1 p.m. about “best practices to catch and keep recruiters’ attention, how to best communicate during these times, how to get past the application portal” and more.
📝 ‘How to report safely: Strategies for women journalists and their allies’: The Knight Center is offering a free four-week online course starting May 3 that will teach students “frameworks to mitigate and manage associated risks for all women (cis, trans and femmes) and allies.”
Alison Baskerville, “lead inclusive safety trainer for the International Women’s Media Foundation,” will serve as instructor.
💻 Shared advice on how to remotely start a job, internship or fellowship: I turned to Twitter last week to ask others for their advice on how to start a new job from home. Thank you to those who responded and shared their notes about everything from fake commutes to office set ups establishing boundaries. I’d love it if more folks responded to the thread with their experiences!
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
♥️ ‘Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund’: The International Women’s Media Foundation tweeted about a “flood of donations [to] the Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund” last week. Folks are able to donate here or apply for support here.
🍝 ‘Pasta primavera with asparagus and peas’: I loved this fresh, Spring-y recipe from NYT. It was super filling and easy to make.
🐄 ‘Buddy the beefalo’ is a sucker for cows: So this beefalo escaped in Connecticut and was on the loose for about eight months. It was a whole saga, but it’s got a happy ending.
