Journalism jobs at Axios, FiveThirtyEight, Chicago Tribune, The 19th and more
Sign up for a webinar with Report for America and learn about a new fellowship
Editor’s note: This newsletter will be taking a week off, but I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, December 6!
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
📍 ‘Axios Local expands to 11 new cities’: Adweek reported last week on Axios’ announcement that the organization is bringing its local newsletters to “11 new locations, bringing its total number of cities to 25, proving that a lean, centralized model to local news is viable.”
Gigi Sukin of Axios tweeted that they’re hiring more than 30 people.
💻 ‘Report for America: How you can help strengthen local journalism’: The Society of Environmental Journalists is hosting a webinar with Report for America staff to help attendees learn “how to apply for more than 100 full-time journalism positions, including many environmental positions.”
The session is scheduled for Wednesday, December 8, at 1 p.m. ET.
✨ ‘The 19th and Nikole Hannah-Jones launch a fellowship program for graduates of HBCUs’: Poynter published a piece on the program, which “will place five HBCU graduates in one-year, salaried positions at The 19th.” Applications are expected to open in the middle of next year with folks joining the newsroom in September 2022.
📝 ‘A new way to think about the value of your work’: Tim Herrera passed the mic in this week’s Freelancing with Tim newsletter to Jenni Gritters and Wudan Yan of The Writers’ Co-op where they pulled back the curtain on an important freelancing topic:
“As freelance writers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that what we do is not valuable monetarily,” they wrote. “But considering value may help you see how lucky your clients are to be working with you, and how much they benefit from your expertise, skill, and well-crafted copy.”
Thanks for reading!
Mandy
P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
🐶 ‘Good girl, Dog Head Man’: SNL’s ‘New Military Weapon’ sketch is one of my recent favorites and not just because most of the actors kept breaking.
❓ ‘Will Montero get what he wants?’ This Lil Nas X - Maury Show episode was the crossover I never knew I needed.
😺 ‘Cats with jobs’: I recently stumbled across this Twitter account featuring cats as truckers, cashiers, living billboards and more.
