Cover letter advice and WaPo's focus on Instagram to grow subscriptions
Support my work! Subscribe to the paid edition of this newsletter for additional posts. It’s $36 for the whole year or about the cost of a cup of coffee each month. And thank you!
Happy Monday! Skim for your weekly roundup of jobs, industry readings, resources and more.
📝 Cover letter advice and feedback: Tim Herrera of The New York Times tweeted, “What are the best (and worst) traits of cover letters you’ve seen over the years? Common themes among successful ones? What makes one stand out?”
Kaleigh Rogers of FiveThirtyEight wrote:
I’ve applied for a LOT of jobs over the years. You want the cover letter to demonstrate why *they* should want to hire you, not why you want the job. They already know you want the job, that their company is great, and that it’s a great position.
📷 WaPo’s focus on Instagram to grow subscriptions: The Washington Post now has an Instagram Editor and plans to hire additional staff (see openings below) “to ramp up vertical, visual storytelling on the platform and expand the Post’s identity beyond its publication,” Digiday reports.
🐦 A Twitter thread of jobs: Josh Stearns, Program Director of the Public Square Program at Democracy Fund, curated a list of dozens of recently posted journalism jobs on Twitter last week.

P.S. Here are a few things that fueled this newsletter/me this week:
👓 Dan Levy on ‘SNL’: From sketches about Zillow to friends at a wedding I’m *obsessed* with his performance.
❄️ Snowy scenes from home: I’m thankful to be able to work from home and catch wintry views like this one.
🦛 ‘Do you want to eat a snowman?’: This hippo from the Philly zoo does. Sort of.
