A big thank you goes out to Bhumi Tharoor, Managing Editor at The Atlantic, for her thoughtful answers to a few questions about what it’s like to work at the magazine and multi-platform publisher.
What advice would you share with those who aspire to work for The Atlantic?
Simply put, The Atlantic is a place for curious and kind people with big ideas. Our journalism is multi-faceted: Beyond writers and editors, we have podcast producers, fact-checkers, copy-editors, art designers, audience editors, operations analysts and more. People who tend to do well here generally like to read many different things often, appreciate beautiful writing and share our values: we seek colleagues who have a spirit of generosity, produce work that’s animated by the force of ideas and share in the sense of belonging that so uniquely characterizes our newsroom. My advice is to engage with our journalism, have a sense of what we can do well and where our opportunities for growth are and build the story of how you and your convictions and curiosities can thrive at a place like The Atlantic.

How can candidates make their applications stand out?
Candidates who stand out see the big picture, but also demonstrate a subtlety and originality in their thinking. Along with having a familiarity with our work, they know how to ask the right questions—no matter how blunt or probing—are adept at grappling with the deeper forces shaping our moment, and anticipate stories that start important conversations. Strong candidates are committed to ideas and are of no party or clique.
